A Regional Delicacy from Montafon "Sura Kees"

Whether on fresh bread at breakfast, in a salad bowl, or wrapped in bacon – no holiday in Montafon is complete without tasting Sura Kees, the region’s traditional sour cheese.

On twelve alpine dairies in Montafon, around 700 cows provide the milk for its production. To make a single wheel, the dairyman needs between ten and twelve litres of milk. Beyond being a true delicacy, Sura Kees is also valued for its low cholesterol and fat content.

You’ll find Sura Kees on almost every restaurant menu in Montafon – for example in the form of the traditional Montafoner Kässpätzle. It can also be purchased directly on the alpine dairies, in most local farm shops, and in selected grocery stores.

A particularly special holiday experience awaits at the Cheese House in Schruns: there you can take part in a course at the in-house dairy school and try your hand at cheese-making yourself – a perfect activity for a rainy day!
